Matt Moore's first start as the Miami Dolphins' quarterback could turn out to be Tony Sparano's final game with the team.

With speculation about their head coach's job security continuing to swirl, the Dolphins will attempt to avoid an eighth consecutive loss dating back to last season when they head to MetLife Stadium for a Monday night matchup against a New York Jets squad that's in a rut of its own right now.

Things may have gone from bad to worse for Miami, which last registered a victory with a 10-6 upset over the eventual AFC Championship Game participant Jets in New Jersey on Dec. 12 of last season. Not only was the reeling club's present skid extended with a 26-16 defeat at San Diego two weeks back, but starting signal-caller Chad Henne sustained a separated left shoulder during the game that required season-ending surgery.

In his place steps in Moore, who's had flashes of success during a 13-start stint with Carolina from 2007-10. The 27-year-old went 4-1 after taking over for an injured Jake Delhomme for the final five games of the 2009 campaign, but struggled after being tabbed as the Panthers' No. 1 quarterback prior to last season and briefly lost the job to then-rookie Jimmy Clausen before hurting his shoulder and eventually being placed on injured reserve.

"He's been in the huddle as a starting quarterback before," said Sparano of Moore. "I think the guy has good leadership qualities. He's run off a string of wins, four or five wins up there in Carolina. He's a confident guy, little bit of different swagger to him when he gets in the huddle."

Moore completed 17-of-26 passes for 167 yards in relief of Henne against the Chargers, but was intercepted once and sacked three times.

As for Sparano, the embattled Bill Parcells disciple was able to survive Miami's Week 5 bye but likely still remains on thin ice, and there's a belief he may not be so fortunate if the Dolphins flounder on Monday in front of a national television audience.

Having an extra week to prepare may work in the Dolphins' favor, however, as the team is 2-1 following a break under Sparano's direction. In their initial game after the bye last season, the Dolphins went into Lambeau Field and dealt powerhouse Green Bay a 23-20 overtime defeat.

Sparano's teams have also held their own in recent battles with the rival Jets -- especially on the road -- as Miami has bested New York as the visitor in each of the past three years.

New York is experiencing its own period of turmoil at the moment, having gone winless on a challenging three-game trek at Oakland, Baltimore and New England after prevailing in its first two outings of the season. There's also been talk of dissension within the locker room, with reports circulating last week that the Jets receiving corps met privately with head coach Rex Ryan to complain about offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's play-calling, which the organization later denied took place.

One of the players mentioned was veteran Derrick Mason, who was in turn traded to Houston on Wednesday.

The Jets' normally stout defense has had its issues as well, with the unit entering this week's play ranked a surprising 26th overall against the run. New York surrendered 152 rushing yards and a season-worst 446 overall to the high- powered Patriots in a 30-21 loss in Foxborough last Sunday.

New York hasn't dropped four in a row since the pre-Ryan era of 2007, when it suffered six straight setbacks en route to a 4-12 finish.

"This is a critical game for us Monday night, and that's where our focus is going to be," said Ryan.

The nation will have their second week of Chicago Bears football tonight when the beloved host the Vikings tonight at Soldier Field. The Bears have a 2-3 record while the Vikings sit at 1-4. With the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions sitting at 5-0 at the time of this piece (let’s assume the Packers will be 6-0 as they host the winless St. Louis Rams today and the Lions host the inconsistent Atlanta Falcons today. The Lions can also potentially be 6-0), both teams have a huge hill to climb if they even have a remote chance of contending for the division title. With the Lions having wins over the Bears and Vikings while the Packers have a win over the Bears, this thought is fading quite quickly. While the Bears still remain a contender for a wildcard, the Vikings would like to be a bit more respectable.

The news for the Chicago Bears got even worse now that Julius Peppers will most likely miss tonight’s game. With rookie Chris Conte making his rookie debut in the secondary alongside Major Wright, this isn’t what the doctor ordered for the worst safeties in the NFL. Vikings quarterback Donovan McNabb isn’t chucking the ball around the field much these days, so the Bears will have to focus on a certain guy named Adrian Peterson. Based on some of the runs that Detroit Lions tailback Jahvid Best was breaking off last week, Peterson will look to repeat his rookie performance in 2007 with his 224 yards rushing and 361 all-purpose yards. I was at that game, and still have visions of him running up and down the field.

Jared Allen may be a tool but he’s foaming at the mouth tonight as he will get his chances to get after Jay Cutler. Considering the Chicago Bears offensive line is as bad as the safeties, this could also be Allen’s night. Allen enter’s tonight’s action with 8.5 sacks and trust me he’s looking for more. Linebacker Chad Greenway is another guy to watch. He’s not spectacular but makes plays. Ageless Antoine Winfield is a solid player as well. Besides this group, there’s nothing spectacular about the Vikings defense.

Tonight will be a homecoming for former Bears wide receivers. Bernard Berrian and Devin Aromashodu will be looking for some revenge. Aromashodu has been solid for the Vikings, and continues to help build the case against wide receiver coach Darryl Drake.

As far as the game goes, I have a horrible feeling about the Bears chances. This team is in total disarray and the inmates are beginning to rumble. Popular safety Chris Harris was benched and has been questioning the coaching staff about the decision. He’s also mentioned the inconsistent accountability with Lovie Smith. This can’t be good for the state of the team. Considering the lack of any line-play and the poor secondary, this team is susceptible to the big play and trust me, the Vikings know this too. Considering the circumstances of the season, Cutler and running back Matt Forte are showing their talents. Too bad they don’t get much help from the other nine guys on offense.

Saints defensive end Will Smith

Smith seems to be back and playing at a top-flight level. There are some -- Smith and the Saints coaches among them -- who believe he has always been a premier player, but there is no question No. 91 seems to be in the backfield more this season, seems to be on a quarterback more often, or batting down a pass.

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams called attention to Smith last week, noting how Smith is fresh having missed the first two games because of suspension. But Smith was making his presence felt in training camp before the suspension took effect.

"I always batted a lot (of passes); it's all in the perception," Smith said. "A lot of the times I've probably consistently done the same things ever since I've been here. I think the difference is, maybe when we have more turnovers, the focus isn't on the defensive line or up front. Overall, I think I've been pretty consistent and played on the same level. Sometimes the numbers are high, sometimes the numbers are low, but just getting after the quarterback, getting hits, getting pressures, that's been pretty much consistent.

Defensive line coach Bill Johnson pointed to Smith's rejuvenation during training camp, saying Smith has slimmed down and been asked to once again make hounding quarterbacks, rather than stopping the run, his primary job.

"Each year the scheme changes and the defense is a little bit different, so this year we have more opportunities to make plays on the defensive line -- it might be one of the stronger points on our team," Smith said. "You just play in the scheme and the opportunities will come.

The real key, according to Smith, is the depth the Saints now have at his position.

"Me knowing that I don't have to play the whole entire game," he said when asked for a key to his consistent performances. "The past couple of years I probably played the whole entire game and just came out a couple of plays here and there. Now that we have Turk (McBride), we have Cameron (Jordan), we have Junior (Galette), Jeff (Charleston) when he's up - we have a lot of defensive ends in there that can play and I can come out, which makes life a lot easier for me."

Barber is the NFL's all-time leader in sacks by a cornerback, and with Gerald McCoy, Tampa Bay's best defensive lineman, out, the Buccaneers are likely to seek even more pass rushing help from Barber.

"Always Ronde Barber -- wherever he is, you've got to find that guy," Saints guard Jahri Evans said. "We've got eyes on him on certain plays to make sure he doesn't come in there and blow it up. Especially when he's in that slot; he blitzes a lot from that slot. He's just a veteran guy, he's been playing us a long time and he knows a lot of what we do and our tendencies. Those guys read and react so we have to make sure he doesn't blow us up for negative plays.

"He's different people's responsibility on different plays," Evans said. "So we've got eyes on him, make sure he doesn't take someone out behind the line of scrimmage. Still, he's just a vet. When they read it they just react, don't' even think about it. That's why he makes big plays and what could be a 50-yard gain becomes a 2-yard loss."

The New England Patriots are set to take on the up-and-down Dallas Cowboys this afternoon.

Despite their struggles, the Cowboys look to be a tough test for this Pats team, so here are things to look out for.

Will the defense continue its positive momentum? The much-maligned Patriots defense looked much better against the Jets last week. The question is, though, was that actual improvement or a reflection on the quality of their opposition? The Jets, after all, were reeling. Their gameplan was ridiculously conservative, and they did start to have success when they went to the pass late.

The Cowboys present a bigger challenge. Tony Romo is talented (if mistake-prone) and he has very good receivers in Miles Austin and Dez Bryant. If the Pats secondary can slow Dallas' passing game, it will be a positive sign for this team.

Will Tom Brady rebound? After looking absolutely unstoppable in the first weeks of the season, Brady has come back to Earth in the past two weeks. He was proficient if unspectacular against the Raiders, and looked somewhat flustered against the Jets.

The Cowboys defense is helmed by coordinator Rob Ryan, who (like his brother) seems to have a knack for throwing Brady off his game. The Patriots will have to be mindful of exotic defensive schemes.

Is this running game for real? For two straight weeks, the Patriots have been able to run the ball extremely well. BenJarvus Green-Ellis looked very good last week (totaling 139 yards), and Stevan Ridley was quite efficient against the Raiders, with 97 yards on 10 carries.

If this Pats running game is for real, that would take some pressure off Brady — the team would be able to win when he's merely human. It would also bode well for late-season success, as weather will occasionally make passing difficult.

Can anyone rush the passer? The Patriots once again had problems getting to the quarterback last week. The team simply has problems applying pressure, and this likely contributes to its pass-defense woes.

The Pats recently lost DT Mike Wright for the season, making the team rather thin on the line. Can Albert Haynesworth handle extended action? Is there someone else who can step up and play well?

Can Chad Ochocinco continue his recent progress? Ocho has been a rather forgotten man in this passing offense. This isn't necessarily his fault — Wes Welker and the team's tight ends simply present more of a matchup problem for opposing defenses.

He has, however, been able to carve out a small place in the passing game. It will be interesting to see if he can build on that as teams start to focus more on Welker, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Can he regain his once-dominant form?
